Bio
Yolanda Avila’s family has lived in Colorado Springs since 1958 and in Southeast Colorado Springs on and off since 1967. Yolanda started in kindergarten at Fort Carson and graduated from Colorado College in 1985 with a BA in International Political Economy. In 1990 Yolanda began work as a criminal defense investigator in Orange County, CA. She also worked as a field supervisor and mentor to the local university students. In 1998, Yolanda was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that has a prognosis of blindness. Avila retired in 2011, she returned to Colorado Springs to be near her mother.
Avila immediately championed several causes in District 4 by improving transit accessibility, fixed bus routes and frequency.
Her commitment to improving infrastructure in her district resulted in an unprecedented amount of infrastructure construction, including roads, bridges, sidewalks and ADA ramp construction. She is extremely excited and proud of the work that will be commencing on the South Academy Boulevard Reconstruction from Bijou to Drennan in early 2022 as well as the Circle Drive Bridges Replacement project. The state bridge at Airport over Spring Creek has been converted to a beautiful pedestrian bridge, the ribbon cutting was June 9th 2022. As there has never been an Urban Renewal Authority Project in Southeast, she has now championed two URA designations. Avila formerly served as a resident leader of the R.I.S.E. (Resilient, Inspired, Strong, Engaged) Southeast Coalition, which sponsors activities for projects in Southeast and spearheaded the Panorama Park initiative. Panorama park is a thirteen acre neighborhood park, the first of its kind in the entire city. The ribbon cutting will be held on July 17th 2022. She is an alumna of:

She has also been recognized by Pikes Peak Community College in 2019 with a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award for Distinguished Service and by El Cinco de Mayo, Inc. in 2021 for Excellent Community Leadership.
Yolanda’s guide dog Puma accompanies her to the many boards, commissions, and committees where she serves gratefully as both a City Councilmember and a CSU board director.
